On June 11, America's Got Talent fans were devastated to learn that season-three winner Neal Boyd died from heart failure at his mom's Sikeston, Missouri home.
The beloved opera singer won over hearts from across the nation with his incredible vocals and touching backstory of being raised by a single mother who gave him the confidence to perform in public.
According to Scott County Coroner Scott Amick, Boyd died at around 6 p.m. at only 42 years old.
New details have emerged on the late singer's passing, and they're just as heartbreaking as the news of his death.
It's been reported Boyd's body was found by his mother, Esther, when she went into his bedroom to check on him.
She is said to have immediately dialed 911 when she couldn't wake up her unconscious son - who had been wearing a sleep apnea mask. Authorities administered CPR, but sadly Boyd couldn't be revived.
According to the police report, there were no illegal narcotics found in his room or signs of foul play.
While no autopsy was performed, Boyd was known to have several health issues, including a heart condition, kidney failure, and liver problems.
"You can attribute that to the fact that Neal was a pretty overweight individual and when you are that overweight, that is a challenge to your heart, but his death was attributed mainly to his heart problems," a spokesperson for the Scott County Coroner's Office said.
Following winning the reality show's $1 million prize in 2008, he released his debut album My American Dream in 2009, and even performed at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.
After Boyd's death was announced, America's Got Talent's Instagram page posted a heartfelt note, which read: "We are very saddened to hear that one of our AGT family members, Neal E Boyd, has passed away. Our hearts are with Neal's loved ones during this difficult time."
His friends and fans were also distraught over the news, and took to Twitter to give out their condolences.
In 2017, Boyd and his mother were involved in a serious car accident, which they were still recovering from at the time of his passing.
He later described the accident as "a very, very, very bad wreck," and that he "shattered a lot of bones and shattered my hip, which has left me almost unable to use that leg for now."
However, Boyd was optimistic about his future, and even planned on releasing an "uplifting" album in 2019.
"Any time you're in a moment of struggle, God has a way of coming in and uplifting you. You have these 'down moments,' whether it be health or physical, like it is now, and it just feels like something great is about to happen once I get back on my feet and back in front of the audience again," he added.
Following his death, his body was cremated the next day, with a private funeral held shortly after.
Check out Boyd's first appearance on America's Got Talent, where he wows the audience with his incredible voice.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Boyd's friends and family during this difficult time.
