Hollywood is full of unconventional romances, but few measure up to the saga of Angelina Jolie's complicated love life.
The A-list actress has had flings with both male and female costars, has had three marriages end in separation, and is currently locked in a nasty custody battle with Brad Pitt.
But one of the most intriguing stories from Jolie's past is her three-year marriage to actor Billy Bob Thornton.
This week, Thornton finally spilled the beans on why they broke up.
"A crazy time"
When Thornton and Jolie met, the pair had a 20 year age gap and Thornton had already been divorced four times.
But sparks flew on the set of Pushing Tin, and soon the couple were one of Hollywood's most unconventional May-December romances.
In past interviews, Thornton has sounded regretful and upset about the short-lived marriage.
He told the Hollywood Reporter it was "a crazy time" and claimed he'd "never been fond of it."
In a GQ interview, he admitted that he "never felt good enough" for Jolie, and was "real uncomfortable around rich and important people."
But the actor had a different take when he reminisced about Jolie on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's In Conversation podcast.
"I look at that time as a great time "˜cause, you know, Angie is still a friend of mine and she's a great person," he explained.
"The movies she makes are still things that are important to her... and whether they succeed or fail, she still does what she believes in, and I'll always respect her for that."
But the actor also didn't hold back about what tore their relationship apart.
"It sounded like we were wearing a bucket of blood around our necks"
All celebrity couples are the subject of gossip, but Thornton says tabloid rumors about him and Jolie were "exaggerated."
"It wasn't as crazy as people wrote about it," he claims, even when it came to their infamous necklaces - which contained vials of each other's blood.
"The necklaces were a very simple thing," Thornton says.
""˜Hey, let's poke our finger with a pin and smear a little on there, and when we're away from each other, we'll wear the necklace.'"
"That was that easy, but by the time it came out in the press, it sounded like we were wearing a bucket of blood around our necks."
For the record, there's no bad blood between the two stars, and Thornton blames their breakup on their "country mouse" and "city mouse" personalities.
"Hers is a global lifestyle and mine is an agoraphobic lifestyle. So, that's really ... the only reason we're probably still not together, you know, "˜cause [it was] just a different path and life we wanted to take."
Thornton reassured his fans that "Angie is still a friend of mine and she's a great person and she's done so much."
Jolie obviously still has affection for Thornton, because she told Entertainment Weekly, "I still love him dearly and think of the world of him."
"I'm proud to have been his wife for a time."
Thornton swore off marriage after his split from Jolie, but tied the knot with costume maker Connie Angland in 2014.
