When celebrities get divorced, it can often get messy. Who takes the house, who gets the kids, it's all a tricky situation to be a part of.
But when Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck split up, everything seemed amicable. The couple, who had been married for 10 years, announced their separation in 2015. They released a statement after the announcement, indicating their three kids were their top priority.
After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time.
This will be our only comment on this private family matter. Thank you for understanding.
Garner and Affleck remained friendly through the divorce proceedings, with neither of them hiring a lawyer.
However, anyone paying attention could tell that Affleck was heading downhill. He often looked disheveled in public, even though he seemed to be in a committed relationship with Saturday Night Live producer Lindsay Shookus.
But just days ago, Affleck was seen on a date with Playboy Playmate Shauna Sexton in Malibu. Images of the Batman actor and Sexton sparked speculation that he and Shookus were through. It wasn't until Garner showed up on Affleck's doorstep that everyone found out just how serious the issue was.
On August 20th, Garner was the picture of perfection as she posed for her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
No one knew that just two days later, she would be stepping in to try and save her ex-husband's life. According to TMZ, Garner showed up at Affleck's home on Wednesday to stage a private intervention in order to get him to stop drinking.
Garner grew concerned when she saw an image of the father of her kids receiving a delivery of beer and liquor to his home, the same day she accepted her Walk of Fame honor. When she showed up at Affleck's house, the 13 Going on 30 actress probably expected him to put up a fight.
However, he apparently knew he needed help and was receptive to the idea of rehab. Just hours after she arrived, Garner was seen driving Affleck to a live-in rehab facility.
"He is seeking treatment. He knew he needed help and was vocal about it," a source told PEOPLE.
It's not the first time Affleck has battled with alcohol addiction. In 2001, the Oscar winner first entered a rehab facility and maintained his sobriety for over 15 years. However, in 2017, he announced that he had once again completed treatment for the same disease.
I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I've dealt with in the past and will continue to confront.I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step.
I'm lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I've done the work I set out to do.
This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.
It is unclear how long Affleck intends to stay in treatment, but all that matters is he is taking steps to ensure his health and his family remain in tact.
We wish Affleck all the best as he begins his treatment.
