On February 14, a senseless tragedy occurred in Parkland, Florida, when a gunman opened fire at his former high school.

The attack resulted in the death of 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, with dozens more injured.

Assistant football and security guard Aaron Feis was one of the gunman's victims, who sacrificed his life to protect his students.

"It is with Great sadness that our Football Family has learned about the death of Aaron Feis," the school's football team's Twitter account posted early Thursday morning. "He was our Assistant Football Coach and security guard. He selflessly shielded students from the shooter when he was shot. He died a hero and he will forever be in our hearts and memories."

While people across the country are coming together in mourning, some are finding it difficult to keep their emotions in tact.

CNN counter-terrorism analyst, Philip Mudd, broke down last night when he discussed the school shooting.

"I have 10 nieces and nephews," Mudd told CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, as he began to lose his composure. "We're talking about bump stocks, we're talking about legislation."

"A child of God is dead. Can not we acknowledge in this country that we cannot accept this?" he said, before exclaiming, "I can't do it, Wolf. I'm sorry, I can't do it!"

The camera cut quickly to Blitzer, who said: "You're obviously, this is so emotional. Unfortunately it happens all too often. And people say we've got to learn some and, as a result people say we've got to learn some lessons. Unfortunately lessons are never, never learned."

Police have charged 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz with 17 counts of premeditated murder. According to PEOPLE, Cruz was a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, but was expelled due to disciplinary reasons.

This is the U.S.'s 18th school shooting of the year.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims involved.
