Trophy hunting is more common than you think. It's estimated that 20,000 endangered animals are killed every year for recreational purposes.
These animals include black bears, Mountain zebras, leopards, African elephants, Chacma baboons, and lions.
Hundreds of people around the world are working to protect these animals that are at the brink of extinction, and then there are people who kill them for fun.
While these hunters think posting photos of their kill is something people will glorify them for, it actually sparks outrage.
Public outcry over the death of a rare giraffe
Tess Thompson Talley was recently called out by Twitter account AfricaDigest for murdering a rare black giraffe in South Africa.
"American ... comes to Africa and shoot down a very rare black giraffe courtesy of South Africa stupidity. Her name is Tess Thompson Talley. Please share," the account tweeted.
"If our so called governments can't care for our wildlife then its time we stand up and responsibility of our continent, lands, resources and wildlife....share share share! And lets have a united voice against pillage of Africa, it's the only home we have."
The viral post was retweeted more than 30,000 times.
Most people condemned the killing, calling out South Africa for their lack of animal conservation and protection practices.
Others said that as a hunter she has the "right" to kill animals, if it's not deemed illegal by the government.
"We allow and indeed encourage hunting as an important tourist activity," wrote one Twitter user.
This isn't the first time a rare giraffe has died because of trophy hunters
A few years ago, another American hunter from Idaho posted pictures of herself with the corpses of several dead animals after visiting a private conservancy near South Africa's Kruger National Park.
The animals included a rare black giraffe, warthog, kudu, and impala.
"I got an amazing old Giraffe. Such a amazing (sic) animal!! I couldn't be any happier!!" Sabrina Corgatelli's Facebook photo caption said. "My emotion after getting him was a feeling I will never forget!!!"
Tens of thousands of people commented on her Facebook post, calling her "disgusting" and a "disgrace" for killing an animal that only eats plants.
Corgatelli defended herself on NBC's Today show: "To me it's not just killing an animal, it's the hunt. Everybody just thinks we're cold-hearted killers, and it's not that. There is a connection with the animal, and just because we hunt them doesn't mean we don't have respect for them."
In terms of giraffes being herbivores, Corgatelli also had a response for that:
"Giraffes are very dangerous animals. They could hurt you seriously very quickly," she told host Carson Daly.
In my opinion, the main issue here is that both Corgatelli and Talley will get away scot-free because killing endangered animals is legal.
The fact that the South African government allows trophy hunters to hunt wildlife for recreational purposes just to make money is appalling.
Many argue that there's not enough regulation in these African countries and many trophy hunters don't play by the rules. Do you agree?
