Her foundation, The Doris Day Animal Foundation, announced Monday, that Doris Day has passed away at the age of 97. She died at home surrounded by close friends. She had been in great health for her age until recently when she contracted a serious case of pneumonia.
Doris was known for being a actress, singer, and animal welfare activist. She began her career as a singer in 1939 and later went into acting in classic movies before retiring in 1989.
Doris was married four times. She had one child with her first husband, Al Jorden, who was later adopted by her third husband, Martin Melcher. The boy named Terry passed away in 2004 at the age of 62.
