Deer are shy creatures who try to avoid humans as much as possible. Who could blame them? Our vehicles interrupt their habitat and some of us hunt them.
However, there is one person who can boast about earning the trust and friendship of a deer by showing compassion when the animal needed it the most.
Darius Sasnauskas witnessed the miracle of life when two baby deer were born in his yard near Yellowstone National Park. But, unfortunately things took a turn when one of the fawns experienced complications after its birth.
Sasnauskas noticed that one of the fawn sustained injuries to its front leg and was lagging behind the rest of the family. He told The Dodo that the "fawn was helpless" which resulted in its mother and sibling abandoning it.
The newborn fawn didn't stand a chance at surviving in the wild alone, especially with an injury. Sasnauskas soon realized that this was a "special situation" so he took it upon himself to help the baby deer even though he doesn't support keeping wild animals as pets.
The fawn adapted quickly to her new home and friends. According to Sasnauskas, [For the] first week, she slept by my bed on my shirt, and the shirt became very important to her. She had to have it to be able to sleep."
Sasnauskas nurtured the fawn back to good health by treating the injured leg, feeding her every four hours and cleaning her. She even started to form a bond with him and one of the dogs, Mack.
All the while, he knew that the fawn will need to rejoin her family in the wild. "Since day one I was hoping to release baby deer back to the wild," he said. "I really hoped that she did not get attached to me too much," he added, "because that would make [it] very hard for her to survive in the wild. She would become [an] easy target for hunters and predators."
It took multiple attempts to release her, but she always made her way back home. Finally one evening, Sasnauskas spotted the baby's mother and was able to release her without difficulty. The fawn is now free and safe with her family where she truly belongs.
Lucky for us, Sasnauskas recorded the whole rescue process so you can see how it all happened. If you've got a few minutes to spare, this heartwarming video will not disappoint.
