Did you know that in the United States 29 people die every day in crashes that involve an impaired driver?
While there are effective methods in place to prevent such tragedies, motor accidents involving alcohol still account for 28% of traffic-related deaths, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
No matter how many warnings the government and organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) send out, sometimes they seem to fall on deaf years.
The holiday season, between Thanksgiving and the end of New Year's weekend, seems to be the most dangerous time to be on the road. It is the most traveled time of the year, and it also happens to be the period when law enforcement officials make the most DUI arrests.
This year, the American Automobile Association (AAA) is hoping to make our roads a little bit safer so no family will have to mourn a loved one this holiday season.
AAA, which normally provides roadside assistance and other services to its members, is bringing back its holiday safe ride program called Tipsy Tow.
Its clubs across the country will be participating in the initiative which is open to both members and non-members.
If someone has had a little too much to drink, instead of driving, they can call AAA and their car or truck will be towed home free of charge for up to 10 miles, according to Fox26.
All they'll have to do is call AAA Emergency Roadside Services at 1-800-222-4357.
Just remember that this special service is only available in select states and on the following select dates only:
- Wednesday before Thanksgiving (11/21/2018)
- New Year's Eve
- Super Bowl Sunday (02/03/2019)
- Memorial Day (05/27/2019)
- March 20th, 2019
You can visit the AAA website for more information on this potentially life-saving program.
