A Canada Goose Is Waiting For Her Mate Who Will Never Return

When a mother duck takes her babies for a swim on the pond, her mate is nowhere in sight. Geese are quite different. The female and male stay together to protect and raise the goslings until they're old enough to be on their own. Once they mate, the birds remain a pair for life.

But what happens when one of the geese dies suddenly?

For 3 years, a female goose named Juliet migrated to Atlanta, Georgia each winter with her mate. In the spring, they'd fly together up north to have another brood of goslings. Unfortunately, the pair nested in a parking lot, and one day Juliet's mate was killed by a car.

Instead of following instinct and flying north when the weather turned warmer, Juliet stayed in the parking lot waiting for her mate who would never return.

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/04/sad-goose.JPG" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
Scoopnest

Bystanders reported that the Juliet slept on the concrete sidewalk and paced up and down all day, refusing to leave. In the hopes of trying to get Juliet to move on, the landlord asked that people not feed her, but some began to feel sorry for the heartbroken goose.

"It's cute and sweet and heartbreaking all the same time," a bystander said in an interview.

<amp-anim src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/04/980x.gif" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-anim>
The Dodo

The loyal goose's mourning period lasted 3 months before rescuers decided to step in. Atlanta Wild Animal Rescue Effort took Juliet to the rescue center to help her get back on her feet.

<amp-facebook data-href="https://www.facebook.com/kaitlynrossjournalist/posts/1479812528716016:0" layout="responsive" height="600" width="640"></amp-facebook>

Juliet's rescuers gave her a new home and plenty of food to eat.
