Many common myths still exist about people and animals with albinism. One of the most dangerous myths is that they either possess magical powers that should be exploited, or that they are evil and cannot be trusted.
Thankfully, most people know that albinism is an extremely rare genetic condition that prohibits the body from producing a pigment known as melanin.
Melanin is responsible for the coloring on an animal's skin, fur or scales. The true test for albinism is in their eyes - true albino animals have red eyes. White animals with blue eyes are what is known as leucistic. These creatures have a reduced pigmentation compared to other animals of their species, but their condition isn't as severe as albinism.
