Gypsy Rose Blancharde and her boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn were arrested a few days after killing Gypsy's 48-year-old mother, Dee Dee Blancharde, in 2015.

Upon learning about this case, HBO created a documentary called Mommy Dead and Dearest that aired on March 2017, which recounts the peculiar life story of Gypsy and her mother.

Some condemned Gypsy's decision to allow her boyfriend to murder her mother, while she heard from the bedroom, and others sympathized with her. But why?

Dee Dee was a simply a single mom from Missouri taking care of her ill daughter who suffered from leukemia, asthma, muscular dystrophy, brain damage, and other chronic conditions.

Well, that's what Dee Dee had family members, neighbors, doctors-and worst of all-her daughter into believing.

Gypsy, now 25-years-old, developed normally. Her mother faked her daughter's medical issues and made her suffer through unnecessary medical procedures, such as feeding tubes and cancer medicine. Gypsy was told that she had the mental capacity of a young child and couldn't walk, so she was bound to a wheelchair for a decade.

Experts believe that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen by proxy, which makes a guardian exaggerate or induce illness for attention and sympathy.

The truth slowly started to unravel and Gypsy didn't know who she could turn to. Her mother was super controlling and didn't allow her to make friends or keep in contact with her father or other family members.

When she secretly started an online romance with Nicholas, she told him her life story. It took two years until they planned to commit the murder.

"It's like she played out that part of the fairy tale, you know?" Kristy, Gypsy's stepmom, said on the HBO documentary. "She got rid of the evil [villain]."

Gypsy lived in a mental and physical prison for all her life, and now she is confined to four prison walls, serving 10 years for the second-degree murder of her mother. She is eligible for parole in 2024 (at the age of 34).
